Enthusiastic Tutor
Why Education and Learning is Important to Me
From a young age, I was expected as the eldest to help my younger sibling with their school work and to teach them new subjects over summer vacation. As I grew older, I became the go-to tutor for the children of family friends and I also volunteered at the local Police Athletic Leagues to teach young children chess. My favorite memory of high school was Senior Take Over day when I got to replace my favorite teacher for the day and teach my favorite subject: Chemistry.
The greatest experience with tutoring is seeing the twinkle in the child's eye when they finally understand a difficult concept.
My tutoring approach is to EX.C.I.T.E.: expect, create, impassion, tailor, and engage.
Why Governess?
When people hear governess, they immediately think of old British tales of the middle-aged educated women who acted as personal teachers to young children in an aristocratic household. While I am not British, I aspire to be the academic mentor parents need and to give support to not only the child's education but also their manner, etiquette and approach to life. To parents and adults looking for additional help, my responsibilities to you are:
Ensure that the child completes the homework
Create fun and educational activities to promote learning
Teach specialized subjects as interests spark
Work with the child on having proper manners and etiquette
Prepare the child for exams/assessments
Encourage the child to behave and complete studies
The EX.C.I.T.E Method
EXPECT - Positive expectations are self-fulfilling prophecies. All children and adults have the capacity to grow and make progress, that is the core of what makes us human. When you expect nothing--and act as such--the student mirrors that attitude. I expect that my students want to do better and to learn more; I approach them with that mindset.
CREATE - All students are different. The tutoring program is created based on the student's interest. I always end lessons with additional questions that help makes the student think. Additionally, I want them to create the experience they want with a tutor, teaching them to take their studies seriously and purposefully.
IMPASSION - The hardest job is to teach my students passion for learning. This is why one of the major components of our sessions is focused on what the student wants to learn and then linking it to other subjects to promote the same passion. Most students tend to be deterred by math but towards the end will, at least, bear with it.
TAILOR - All students are different. The tutoring program is tailored based on the student's learning style. I go through multiple methods when the student is not understanding the concept using the current method. From there on, the sessions are tailored to the style that most benefits the child.
ENGAGE - Engagement benefits all parties. Being energetic, happy, and excited tends to permeate to the students. Sometimes it takes 200% of effort to get the student to engage. Sometimes it takes only 50%. But the goal of every session is always engagement.
